The St. Michael Albertville
(STMA )Ice Arena first opened its doors in the fall of 1998, built with a lot
of sweat equity and volunteer help from the community. The Arena is utilized
for many area programs, such as Youth Hockey practices, games and tournaments
ages ranging from 3 to 18. Home of the Knights High School Boys JV/Varsity Hockey
Program and the North Wright County River Hawks Girls Youth Hockey and the Girls
Varsity Hockey programs. The rink is also used for Adult Men's and Women's Hockey
leagues.
The rink also offers a Learn to Skate program through the local area Community Ed. In addition, the rink offers twice every weekend Open skate (Saturday and Sunday afternoons during the months of October through March). Many kids enjoy these activities, especially during Holiday breaks and non-school days. Other activities include: Hockey Camps, Broom-ball and private rentals/birthday parties. A weight training room is available at the rink for Bantam through High School students. The weight training program is coordinated and supervised by the Assistant Varsity Coach.
When the rink first opened, it was considered a seasonal facility and had ice available for about 7 months. Over the years, some improvements have been made, such as: Dehumidification, Sub-floor heat and added compressors for year round use. Some of the dry-land events that have been held over the years: Bids for Kids (an annual fundraising event for a local Catholic School), Fundraising Event for Youth Hockey, Jose Cole Circus, Gun shows, weddings and other private rentals. With the program growing each year, Youth Hockey has a vision for a future second sheet of ice.
With a lot of fundraising
and hard work, that vision could become a reality in the future. In support
of good family fun, the St. Michael/Albertville Ice Arena is a great recreational
facility with lots to offer for people of all ages.
