PLANNING COMMISSION TERMS
2016 TERMS AVAILABLE
The City of Albertville is now accepting applications for the Planning Commission. With two open positions in addition to the role of an alternate, many may be wondering what exactly the Planning Commission is and does. Here’s your guide:
The Planning Commission is an advisory board to the Albertville City Council. The volunteer group of five regular members and one alternate meets once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of the month.
So what do they do?
The group helps advise the council on planning the city. From looking at the comprehensive plan of the city, planning and zoning regulations and land use plans, the members are able to conduct public hearings and hear from residents before voting and making a recommendation for the Council.
Past projects have included discussion of city business such as food trucks, allowance and regulations for breweries and taprooms, sign code updates and rezoning requests, such as a recent example of when a church requests to rezone commercial property.
How does one become part of the Planning Commission?
The application process is fairly painless. Simply submit a letter of interest in either becoming a regular member or an alternate explaining why you are interested, any relevant experience [none required] and your history in the community to the Albertville city clerk. Application deadline is March 1.
Candidates will be screened and interviewed by the City Council and the Council will make the final appointments to the commission.
The regular member terms are three years, meaning they would be up for reappointment on December 31, 2018. The current alternate term would be up for reappointment on December 31, 2017.
The difference between an alternate and a regular member is that alternates will only vote if one of the five regular members are absent. Attendance is expected by all regular and alternate members.
